10 Rules to Remember for Growth in Corporate World
I hung my boots on the day I turned 50.
Beautiful journey of 28 years in corporate world came to an end. It was an early retirement from a 9 to 5 job, which I had planned to pursue my passion for the rest of my life.
I had a successful career as a sales person. Working with large MNCs gave me an opportunity to travel widely, meet people and work together with them. It was a wonderful experience. I share some of my learning to help young professionals for their growth in the corporate world.
Focus on Learning till You Master the Subject
In corporate world there is always a race for being recognized and in this run people do not spend much time in learning. They forget that by doing so they are creating a handicap for themselves instead of creating value. You should focus on learning till you master it — recognition and respect follow automatically. If you run for recognition you will get applause without respect. Believe me, applause fade away very soon. When you have knowledge, you will be respected and you will become a good guide and mentor.
Be a Problem Solver
Problems are part of our lives, so it is in business. Whenever you come across a problem and you are unable to solve, take it to your boss. But go to him with possible solutions as per you. Bosses expect you to be a problem solver and would appreciate your this approach even if your suggested solutions are not the right solutions. This reflects your positive attitude which is liked. Always be a problem solver.
Stay Punctual and Disciplined
Punctuality helps in reducing waste hours. Reach office 15 minutes before time. Be at your conference calls/meetings 15 minutes early and end them within allotted time. These are simple steps but they have very long lasting impact.
Respect Your Colleagues
“We can give away only what we have”
People like when you treat them with respect. Do this irrespective of class, creed, color or status. Treating with respect does not mean that you ignore their mistakes. Highlighting mistakes and correcting them is required but in the process make sure that you are not hurting the ego of a person. Be witty and humorous but do not cross the line. More respect you give more respect you will earn.
Boss is a Boss
Always stay aligned with your boss. Sometimes you may differ from his views but in such cases, never say no immediately. Discuss it out with him and understand the reasons. Remember that he has larger view of organisation’s vision which he is pursuing. This will improve your credibility and give you more authority and independence.
Gossip is rampant at workplace. Avoid gossips and also discourage gossipers. Gossiping creates distrust and lowers the morale of co-workers. In case you get some confidential information of organisation or personal information of your colleagues, try to keep it with yourself and not to share with others. This improves your integrity and management would prefer you for key positions.
Stay for Longer Time
As plant needs time to grow, you need to give time to master things. Once you complete learning, you create value for yourself and for others. Many people change their job quickly just for salary increase. This shows that they do not give importance to learning which is far more important than delta increase in salary. At workplace there are always some or the other issues keep on coming. Many people are not able to handle these issues and find a quick fix solution in changing job. They miss opportunity to learn how to resolve it successfully and continue working at the same place. Staying longer at one place helps you to learn handling temptation of increased salary or running away from handling issues at the workplace.
Set Your Own Targets
“You can’t hit the bull unless you have a target”. Do not get confused this target with the organisational targets set for annual appraisals. The targets I am talking are small targets like getting up in the first alarm, 5 minutes meditation before dinner, 30 minutes walk before going to office, no honking while driving, reading a book every week etc. etc. Improvement is a continuous process and by doing so, you improve continuously and inspire others also to improve.
Think it as Your Own Business
Consider your organisation as your own organisation and take pride in it. This will give you satisfaction and will motivate you to put in more efforts in your job.
Network and Stay Connected
Do not work in silo. Connect with others in the organisation. Take help and also be the first person to help others in need. Use occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, promotion to connect. Network is your net worth. It works wonderfully and helps in generating positive impression about you.
